Congratulations November Tutors of the Month! Dezia Harper: Dezia is a returning tutor for America Reads and this is her second year serving at Vetal Elementary. Dezia is passionate about the America Reads program and the kids that she tutors. Her strong work ethic is only matched by her creativity and dedication. The students absolutely love her and she has established a strong personal connection with each of her students. Her lesson plans are fun and exciting she makes me want to be a kid again. She always provide insight and assistance to the new tutors as well as the returning tutors. Nina (Nazanin) Maghsoodi: Nina's intelligence and goodness of heart pervades everything she does with America Reads. In our carpool, she is inclusive, talkative, and relevant. In her lessons, she is explanatory and specific to each tutee, and in her sessions, her genuine smile and teaching ability seem to empower her tutees and keep them on task. She also hangs her tutees' art- and writing-work on the walls of our tutoring classroom. Keep up the great work, Nina! Gina Kim: Gina is a rock star. As a first year tutor, she's doing a fabulous job! Her dedication shows in her awesome, detailed lesson plans that are well thought-out and super creative. It's obvious her tutees love her and are really benefiting from their time with her. Ryan Pravato: Ryan is a first year tutor and has done an excellent job adapting to the America Reads program. He is very conscientious about his lesson plans and always checks in to make sure he is doing everything he can to create high quality plans for his tutees. As if it isn't overwhelming enough to be a first year tutor, one of Ryan's tutees also has behavioral issues which make it difficult to have an efficient tutoring session. Over the weeks, I've watched as Ryan has used rewards like getting to play hangman and praise such as "wow, you're acting really mature like a fifth grader!" to get his tutee to sit still and listen. The transformation in the behavior of Ryan's tutee is a textbook example of the effectiveness of positive reinforcement. |
